Chapter 2: The Writing Process at Work The Writing Process Fluid, not static – enables you to discover and evaluate your thoughts as you draft and revise Researching Crucial, so you obtain the right information for your audience o Find out about your reader’s needs and how to meet them Information must be factually correct and intellectually significant Determine how to gather and interpret the information needed (research is an ongoing process) o Interviewing people inside and outside your company o Consulting notes from conferences and/or meetings o Collaborating in person, by e-mail, or by instant messaging o Doing internet searches o Locating and evaluating websites o Searching abstracts, indexes, and other references on the Web or in print o Reading current periodicals, trade journals, reports, and other documents o Evaluating reports, products, and services o Getting briefings from sales or technical staff o Conferring with co-workers, customers, or vendors o Participating in a focus group o Surveying customers’ views Planning Goal is to get anything down on paper o It is always easier to clarify and criticize something you can see Careful research prepares you to begin writing Techniques to help you develop, organize, and tailor the right information for your audience o Clustering – in the middle of a piece of paper, write the word or phrase that best describes your topic, then start writing other words or phrases that come to mind Page | 1
