Running head: ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE 2 Introduction Throughout the history of management, several organizational designs have been employed by firms in their efforts to achieve their organizational goals. Some of these designs have been responsible for the success of the firms while others have been detrimental, especially regarding public service motivation. By definition, public service motivation is the trait of the government and non-governmental organization occupation that seeks to expound the reasons for employees’ desire to serve the public. As well, it attempts to explain the employees’ actions concerning the general public interest. Among the most widely accepted and applied designs include the bureaucratic, matrix, and team-based models. This paper aims at elaborating on these models, in terms of how they can be used in public administration and their effects on public service motivation. Bureaucratic Design A bureaucratic organization refers to the type of organization with a command structure that takes the form of a pyramid. The design is regarded as one of the best organized and is characterized by a high level of formality in its way of operations. A part of implementing bureaucracy, every department in the organization is provided with a flow chart that outlines the commanders, and the people to whom every employee is to respond on every matter. Typically, the organization has several layers of management and has most of its powers concentrated at the top, with information generally flowing from top to the lower levels of the organization. According to Malizia, P., Cannavale, C., & Maimone, F. (Eds). (2017), the bureaucratic organization has a significant bearing on the public service motivation for several reasons. The top managers may view this as helping to reduce the time taken to arrive at decisions. However, it can be disadvantageous to the employee motivation as it denies them the chance to grow within the organization. This is because, powers are rarely delegated to them, which denies them the opportunity to ''shine' in the organization. Secondly, the bureaucratic organization suffers significantly from the inability and unwillingness to adopt new changes. This makes
