ABSTRACT: Web - the name which is on the tip of everyone’s tongue now a days and we all know it is the largest database in the world. The first recollection that we get when we think of it, is a vast Data Source where finding the necessary data is a bit difficult. To overcome this problem and with the goal of providing user satisfaction the concept of Web Mining has been introduced. Simply, Web Mining is the Data Mining Techniques that are incorporated to manage WWW. The Web Mining research is at the crossroads of research from several communities such as database, sub areas of machine learning and natural language processing. However there is a lot of confusion over the use of it when compared with various research views. But the Web Mining due to its vast size has found great scope of development. Keeping all these facts in mind, in this paper we elaborated on the types of Web Mining, its usage, popularity along with its applications and limitations. .finally we will conclude with some future directions To improve it for effective and efficient Data retrieval. INTRODUCTION: I.WHAT AND WHY WEB MINING?: Web Mining can be defined as the integration of the information gathered by traditional data mining methods and techniques with information related to web. In a simplified way we could say that it is Data Mining adapted to particularities of web. WHY WEB MINING? The Web—an immense and dynamic collection of pages that includes countless hyperlinks and huge volumes of access and usage information— provides a rich and unprecedented data mining source. However, the Web also poses several challenges to effective resource and knowledge discovery: • Web page complexity far exceeds the complexity of any traditional text document collection. • The Web constitutes a highly dynamic information source. • The Web serves a broad spectrum of user communities

• Only a small portion of the Web’s pages contain truly relevant or useful information. • keyword-based search or topic- directory browsing with search engines such as GoogleorYahoo, which use keyword indices or manuallybuilt directories to find documents with specified keywords or topics; WEB MINING plays a vital role to meet above specified challenges of web so as ser can retrieve data efficiently and effectively. WEB MINING TASKS: Resource Finding: the task of retrieving intended web documents. .Information selection and pre- processing: automatically selecting and pre-processing specific information from retrieved Web resources Generalization: automatically discovers general patterns of individual Web sites as well as across multiple sites. Analysis : validation and/or interpretation of the mined patterns TYPES OF WEB MINING :. upon their applications Web Mining depending upon tyheir applications web mining has been Classified nto three types namely Web Content Mining, Web Structure Mining and Web Usage Mining.
