Callahan 3 Jeff Callahan Sharon Seminario ENGL 2010 07:11:15 Death Thru Prescription Drugs Unfortunately over 100,000 patients die every year from drugs that doctors prescribed “appropriately”, and the problem just gets worse. From 1994 to 2002, emergency room cases involving oxycodone has grown by 450 percent. There is no doubt that prescription abuse is a growing problem in the United States, but it is difficult to see how we are responsible for this recurring issue, after all we are the only nation who sells health to people. Many people are led to believe that teenagers who abuse prescription drugs, either get it from their friend’s or steals them from a family member, some believe that “patients” go to multiple doctors to get multiple prescriptions in order to feed their addiction; but what is the root cause for all of these drugs to be in abundance outside of pharmacies and hospitals? Many doctors will intentionally underprescibe painkillers for patients due to the over estimation that they might become addicted to prescription drugs, but does that mean all patients should receive a lower prescribed dose of medication due to the quality of the drugs?
