Memphis City Schools, City Hall forging $38 million deal Wharton, Cash negotiating proposal to whittle $57 million owed schools into acceptable settlement By Amos Maki Thursday, December 2, 2010 Memphis Mayor A C Wharton and City Schools Supt. Kriner Cash are working on a proposal to settle the school-funding debate for $38 million, according to several sources. That amount is far less than the city and MCS proposed just three weeks ago to settle the funding debate that has been raging since 2008. "They have expressed receptivity to that range," said Wharton, referring to the $38 million figure. "We want to get this out of the way." Any settlement proposed by Cash and Wharton must be approved by the City Council and MCS board. School district general counsel Dorsey Hopson said both sides are still negotiating. "It is my understanding that Dr. Cash and Mayor Wharton have been in constant contact regarding this matter, but as far as I know the city has not made any formal settlement offer," said Hopson. The council cut $57 million from its annual contribution to Memphis City Schools in 2008
