(six-years-old) Suma is depicted as an impoverished and troubled girl. At six years old, she was a slave demanded of her rights to work long hours while being beaten and made fun of. She wore tattered clothing and the other girls teased her for it. She did not live a proper childhood. Yet through this she still remained strong. Her ambitious personality highlights that she desired to go back to her parents and go to school like her brother. She did not want to remain living as a kumlari.
