Why should psychologists care about liking and popularity? Likeable speakers are more persuasive (create more attitude change). Group processes (including conformity/obedience) are affected by patterns of attraction among group members. Political candidates who appear likeable are more likely to get elected. Criminal defendants who appear likeable are less likely to be convicted.

Why should psychologists care about liking and popularity? Less likeable workers tend to have lower incomes than more popular ones. Less popular people tend to have more industrial accidents. Most of people’s lives are spent trying to become popular, and to develop and maintain friendships. Overall happiness is more affected by how well one is liked than by any other consideration.
