Abridged from Business Leadership Review Case Study Series The Crispin Dream  Crispin Chocolates was set up in 1976 by Pierre Crispin, a native of Switzerland and a  devout chocolate lover. The Crispin brand was respected not only for its taste but also for  its high quality ingredients and design. Most consumers felt that Crispin’s was as good as  it got with chocolate and the reason for this was simple. Pierre never wanted his chocolate  to feel mass-produced. The design and style of both the product and the wrapper were  very important to him. ‘High quality chocolate at a fair price’ had been his motto for over 30  years.  In late 2002, at the age of 70, Pierre Crispin decided he would have to give up the day-to- day running of the business. At first he thought he would promote someone from within the  ranks, but he felt that since the business was in good shape, it was the right time to bring  in   someone   with   new   ideas.   Moreover,   he   didn’t   want   to   upset   the   balance   in   his  management team, something that he had carefully built up over the previous 5 years.  They were a well-oiled and efficient machine.  Indeed,   throughout   the   company,   morale   was   high   and   staff   turnover   low.   The  performance indicators were positive and so he was reluctant to move any of the cogs in
