Figure 2 Emily Kamp 11-17-10 Brandon Ford, Emily Hildebrand, Michael Castellani Section 002 Oh No!!! Where Does the Phosphorus Go??? INTRODUCTION: Phosphorus was isolated as a specific and individual element in 1669, by a German alchemist named Hennig Brand, and is found in all living cells ( Phosphorus is a very vital element and an essential nutrient for life (ISP 217 Lab 5 Part 1 PowerPoint slide 11). The human body is very dependent on this element when it comes to structure and function. Phosphorus is best known for its’ creation in bones and teeth ( supplement.htm). Phosphorus is limited unlike some other elements. Part of the reason it is low in abundance is due the fact that it’s not in the atmosphere, is found in rocks and sediments, and is highly reactive. Another characteristic of this element is that levels of Phosphorus also impact the amount of phytoplankton and consequently water clarity. This element also has a role in the process of eutrophication which can be defined as “the process where bodies receive excess nutrients that stimulate excessive algae growth” (ISP 217 Lab 5 Part 1 PowerPoint slide 15). What this means is that increased Phosphorus leads to increased phytoplankton then leading to decreased water clarity. Algae need light and carbon dioxide in order for photosynthesis to take place. Phosphorus is peculiar when it comes to how it moves through ecosystems. Rather than being created and/or destroyed phosphorus instead changes form and is redistributed (ISP 217 Lab 5 Part 1 PowerPoint slide 12). The research question being studied asked “what is the effect of algal growth and animal activities on the phosphorus cycle?” My group’s hypothesis was that after a week in the sun dissolved PO 4 will change in relation to the total phosphorus. We predicted that in the control flask (water only) PO 4 and TP would be equal. In the flask with water and algae we thought PO 4 would be less than TP since the algae means there are more suspended particles and living things take in the dissolved phosphorus. For the flask with water, algae, and Daphnia we had the same prediction as for the water and algae flask. This experiment is important because it helps to understand the different forms phosphorus
