Anthony Bonanni Professor Hodge – Grading TA LaDonna Harriott Law 1101 3-15-2011 Homework #3 Snyder v. Phelps 1.  Albert Snyder’s son, Matthew Snyder, was killed while in combat in Iraq.  The Phelps family and other members of the Westboro Baptist Church protested the  funeral of Matthew Snyder by holding up signs with hurtful phrases geared towards  their belief that God hates America because of America’s tolerance towards gay  people.  According to the case,  580 F.3d 206, 211 (4th Cir. 2009) , Albert Snyder sued  the Phelps family on the claims of invasion of privacy by intrusion upon seclusion  and intentional infliction of emotional distress.  The jury was in favor of Snyder,  awarding him with a total of $10.9 million in damages.  The U.S. District Judge  Richard D. Bennett upheld the ruling but reduced the damage money to a total of $5  million.  The Fourth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals overturned the ruling by
