Most of my part of the final exam will be from the material covered in Module 6 (study questions listed below), but there will be one or two questions from the previous exams and study guides, so you should review the previous study guides and exams. There will also be problems on dilutions, preparing solutions, calculating #cfu/ml, graphing data, etc. on the final exam. Also review use of significant figures and scientific notation for the final, and make sure you are comfortable converting between different measurement units. For example, express 0.013 ml in μ l; express 1.5 x 10 4 mg in gm; express 20 mg/ml in μ g/ml. 2. Be able to identify the following structures (you won’t be asked to reproduce chemical structures) and indicate the functions of these compounds: lactose, allolactose, o -nitrophenyl- β -D-galactoside (ONPG), 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indoyl- β -D-galactopyranoside (X-gal), isopropyl- β -D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG). 3. Define the following terms: operator, repressor, inducer, enhancer, enhancer- binding protein, transcriptional activator, phosphtransferase system, inducer exclusion, adenylate cyclase, catabolite activator protein. 4. Describe how the Escherichia coli lac operon is positively regulated by the catabolite activation protein (CAP) and cAMP.
