Ashley Williams RELI 1001 Honercamp November 29, 2010 Christian Ways of Being Religious In this selection, Lawrence S. Cunningham attempts to provide an overview of the history of Christianity and the problems it has as it enters the third millennium. He starts off by discussing the origins of Christianity which date back to a group of believers, mostly Jewish, who developed around the Mediterranean in the second quarter of the first century. These believers believed in Jesus Christ which literally means “Anointed One.” Jesus Christ was executed in Jerusalem but rose from the dead and now reigns in heaven. The holy book of Christianity is the Hebrew Bible which provides a close connection with Judaism. From the Mediterranean, Christianity spread throughout the world to become what it is now: the dominant world religion. Although very complex in history and practice, the basis of Christianity is quite simple. The belief that Jesus Christ is God’s only son who was sent to Earth to die on the cross for our
