Each computer housing without packaging measures 40cm x 40cm x 20cm. a) If computer housing could be shipped without packaging, determine the mass of the particulate matter emitted per housing for some conditions as in example 3. b) What fraction of particulate matter would be emitted from transportation as compared with the emissions from manufacturing the housing? Solution The volume of the housings is: 45 x 40 x 20 = 36,000 cm 3 = 0.036 m 3 . a) From the example 3, we know that each truck has a capacity of 130 m 3 , so that each truck can carry 130 m 3 / 0.036 m 3 = 3600 housings. Using the same method as in the example 3, we can write: Particulate Matter = (0.6 grams/km) x (1000 km) x (1 truck/3600 housings) = 0.167 grams per housing.
