Unformatted text preview: 1 Perception & Pattern recognition I Announcements Your first CogLab is due a week from today , uploaded to BB before class. Choose ONE perception experiment and do it. Include ~3 sentences explaining your results. (Make sure youve read and thought about the experiment description in Francis et al.) Name your your results and interpretation after the expt. you chose and submit it to SafeAssign. There is limited access to CogLab in the Ugrad resource room, Psy B120 (often open 9-12 and 2- 5, but check with Ms. Donna Hildenbrand at 632- 7802 to be sure). Start your lab early! Information Processing (Reed, p. 3, Figure 1.1) Perception (Reed, p. 3, Figure 1.1) 2 Theories of pattern recognition Template Feature Gestalt Structure Prototype Template theory Recognition by measuring how much two patterns match Example: Bar codes and readers Template-matching in the sensory store Templates are holistic, unanalyzed A template is compared to a visual image via overlap But the template and image must be in the same position and orientation Templates can be used to demonstrate the existence of a visual sensory store (icon) Icon (visual sensory store) The visual sensory store loses information rapidly unless its refreshed. Phillipss expt (1974): See pattern briefly (1 sec) See blank for variable delay (20, 60, 100, 300, 600 ms) See another pattern and judge: Same or diff? 3 Icon (visual sensory store) The visual sensory store loses information rapidly unless its refreshed. For move trials, length of delay doesnt matter (accuracy is low - flat at ~60%) For still trials, accuracy drops off dramatically after 300 ms (Reed, Figure 2.2) This suggests a sensory store of ~1/4 sec....
