Wright Chromatography 2 1. The TLC Experiments. Three different solvents were tested with three different TLC plates. Each plate was marked 1 cm from one end. One drop of each dye (unknown #936, bromocresol green, new methylene blue, fluorescein, basic fuchsin, and methyl red) was placed across the plate at that mark. The dots were spaced out to provide room for any expansion. The plates were then set into three individual 150ml beakers. The beakers were filled with three different solutions: Acetone 2-propanol 15:2, Acetone 1-propanol 1:1:1, and H 2 O. Solutions were measured so as to be lower than the 1 cm marks on the TLC plates. Each beaker was covered with wrap and left to sit. Upon receiving approval from the lab instructor, the wrap was removed and the plates were taken out. The distance between the original dot and end point of each dye was measured and logged in a data chart. 2.
