Examples 1-8 illustrate the stepwise process in the writing of molecular, full ionic and net ionic equations from water insoluble metal hydroxide bases and soluble strong acids. Example 1. What are the reactants for the following problem as they would be written in a molecular equation? Include the states. The water insoluble compound magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH) 2 reacts or is mixed with an aqueous solution of the strong acid hydroiodic acid or HI (aq) . Answer: Mg(OH) 2(s) + HI (aq) Explanation: The state for Mg(OH) 2 is solid as is indicated by a subscripted (s) since Mg(OH) 2 is water insoluble as is indicated in the problem. Water insoluble means that the substance does not dissolve in water and thus remains as a solid. The state for HI is aqueous as is indicated by a subscripted (aq) since we have an aqueous solution of HI as is indicated in the problem. Practice Problem: What are the reactants for the following problem as they would be written in a molecular equation? Include the states. 1a. The water insoluble compound calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH) 2 reacts or is mixed with an aqueous solution of the strong acid hydrochloric acid or HCl (aq) . Answer: Ca(OH) 2(s) + HI (aq) Example 2a. In a full ionic equation and a net ionic equation, what are the major specie(s) that are formed when the water insoluble compound Mg(OH) 2(s) comes into contact with water? Answer: Mg(OH) 2(s) Explanation: Water insoluble compounds such as Mg(OH) 2 do not dissolve to any significant extent in water. Thus Mg(OH) 2 will remain as a solid when Mg(OH) 2 comes into contact with water. As a result we represent Mg(OH) 2 as Mg(OH) 2(s) in writing full and net ionic equations. Practice Problem (a): In a full ionic equation and a net ionic equation, what are the major specie(s) that are formed when the water insoluble compound Ca(OH) 2(s) comes into contact with water?
