Write the structure of the following compound: 5-methyl-2-hexanol OH CH 3 CH 3 CHCH 2 CH 2 CHCH 3 2. Write the structure of an alcohol that can be oxidized to form an aldehyde. Various answers are possible however the alcohol must be a primary alcohol. CH 3 CH 2 OH 3. Write a chemical equation with chemical structures that can be used to tell the difference in chemical reactivity between the alcohol in problem 1 and benzoic acid. There are a variety of possible answers. The alcohol in problem 1 is a secondary alcohol that can be oxidized by either KMnO 4 /H 2 SO 4 or Na 2 Cr 2 O 7 /H 2 SO 4 to give the corresponding ketone. Benzoic acid is a carboxylic acid that will not react with KMnO 4 /H 2 SO 4 or Na 2 Cr 2 O 7 /H 2 SO 4 . OH CH 3 O CH 3 CH 3 CHCH 2 CH 2 CHCH 3 + KMnO 4 /H 2 SO 4 CH 3 CHCH 2 CH 2 CHCH 3 Benzoic acid is a carboxylic acid that will react with bases such as NaOH and NaHCO 3 to form the sodium salt of a carboxylate group. Benzoic acid and other carboxylic acids will also form carbon dioxide gas bubbles upon reaction with an aqueous solution of NaHCO 3 . The alcohol in problem 1 will not react with NaOH and NaHCO 3 .
