Office: Dept of Modern Languages MAK B-2-243 331-3203 C OURSE DESCRIPTION . This course is a general introduction to modern linguistic concepts applied to the Spanish language. It includes the sound system (phonetics and phonology), word formation (morphology), the structure of utterances (syntax), meaning and usage (semantics and pragmatics), and language variation. C OURSE OBJECTIVES . The goals of this course are: to learn about the discipline of linguistics and how it applies to the Spanish language, specifically: to understand the situation of Spanish in the world to identify and analyze the sound system of Spanish to identify and analyze morphemes in words in Spanish to identify and analyze relationships between words in a sentence in Spanish to understand contexts in which Spanish is used to continue to develop your critical thinking skills as you think critically about the Spanish language to continue to develop your Spanish language proficiency, both productive and receptive proficiency in interpretative, interpersonal, and presentational modes.
