Overview Having Your Say offers a balanced focus on analytic reading and persuasive writing.  Students are taught to  contextualize the conflict and their position historically, politically, and socially through an in depth  exploratory research process so that they are more inclined to develop an original personal position within the  conversation.  By focusing on a single topic, Having Your Say allows students to build a deep knowledge base  about their topic, thus increasing their personal stake in the issue.  As students move through the semester, they  will be able to revise their earlier positions as they approach the final research project. Much like Writing Arguments, Having Your Say focuses on the genre of argumentative writing.  However,  unlike Writing Arguments, Having Your Say  explains the different stases as interrelated moments within a  single argument instead of separate types of arguments.  In place of stases-centered writing prompts, the text  suggests five papers: a critical analysis of an author's argument, a response to an author's argument, a  synthesis of multiple viewpoints, a development of a problem, and a proposal for a solution.
