ISyE 2028 HW#1 – Regression (Empirical Modeling) Due date: September 13 (Monday) Chapter 11 (Simple Linear Regression and Correlation) 1. Problem 11-7 on page 412 of the textbook. In addition, use Excel or any statistical package to get the needed summary statistics of the data provided in your email for using hand calculation formulas described in page 407 textbook to solve the problem. Validate the hand calculation results against the regression outputs given by Excel. 2. With reference to Problem 11-7 , (a) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the slope; (b) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean response with x = 910.

Unformatted text preview: 3. Problem 11-20 (p. 414) part (a). In addition, (b) Derive the variance of the slope estimate; (c) Show that the mean estimate of the slope is unbiased., i.e., E(_hat) = . 4. Case Study ( note that Dr. Lu will email you the data set): Consider the vehicle data published in Consumer Reports . Weight is in tons and mileage in miles per gallon. Use what you have learned in regression analysis to explore which of the following three models fit the data the best. (a) Mileage y = a linear model of weight x . (b) Mileage y = a linear model of log e ( weight x ). (c) Gallons per 100 miles = a linear model of weight x ....
