Social Psychology methods Two major parts - Conceptual: concepts, constructs, and theories of interest - Empirical: what is actually hypothesized and measured - Both parts should be similar Testing Human Nature - Theories: principles that explain predicted and observed events Aggression Example: from, frustration, heat, stress, makes people aggressive Discomfort leads to aggression Hypotheses: testable predictions about how people will respond under certain circumstances -Example Participants who get negative feedback will shock their partners more frequently who get positive feedback k Hypotheses and theories - hypotheses and theories are closely related to each other - hypothese are generated from existering theory Testing human nature Hypotheses… -rely on operational definitions that measure the concept of interest as accurately as possible Aggression example - concept is broad - different forms of aggression o physical o verbal o relational Experimental research Operational definitions and measures should be both reliable and valid Validity- does it measure what it should Reliability- is it consistent
