21:27 9/30 Chinese Americans Iris Chang- work on Asian History, Chinese in America IM Pei – architect Amy Tan- The Joy luck Club ( stereotypical of Chinese men) YO YO Ma – violin  Bruce Lee Very Diverse country- mostly originally came from Hong Kong area Chinese were the first major non Atlantic group to come to the U.S Push Factors Opium Wards – Britain was defending drug dealers, not illegal in Brattain,  o 1839-1842, 1856- 1860 T’aip’ing Rebellion – brought about by instability- remember PUSH FACTOR o 1851-1864 o 20 to 30 million dead First Period, 1849-1882 California Gold rush, 1849 o Gold discovered in 1848, Mexicans , Chinese poured in, 25,000 Chinese  men o Settled mainly in san Francisco( boom town) o Chinese refer to America as Gam Saan ( gold mountain) o Most Chinese came on the credit ticket system  After gold started drying up things started getting more hostile,  Chinese would come in behind them and sift threw what they had left
