28/10/2009 02:25:00 The Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance The American colonization society – belief that African Americans should go  back to Africa and wouldn’t get a fair life in white society o Henry Clay 1916 o Shipped to Sierra Leon and Liberia o Most people involved were anti slavery  o Some African Americans who wanted to convince Africans to leave the  country  o James T Holli encouraged them  o After the civil war a lot of African Americans were trying to find a new  place to go, un-harassed life, most famous destination was Kansas o Benjamin “Pap”Singelton born a slave in 1846 Became bold in abolitionists movement in the war Disappointed in the turn of events of white power in the south,  decided to move to Kansas Once he established himself in Kansas he started advertising  for blacks to come Bring enough to Kansas to make an African American  community Nicodemus, Kansas To buy into Nicodemus company you had to pay 5 dollars
