Unformatted text preview: Hannah Miller FIRST DRAFT: Lets face it; technology surrounds us. From the painful shriek of the alarm clock that is used to wake us up in the morning, all the way to the remote control we use to change the channel when another infomercial has come on late at night. Whether it is seen as a good or bad thing, it is undeniable that technology has at least slightly, if not completely, affected our lives today. For me technology has not been something that has just taken a part in my life, it is something that has influenced the way I act, my beliefs, and how I portray certain aspects of the world. From the way women are made to be helpless in movies, to the false impressions about love and marriage, technology has manipulated the way I see the world and has sped up my time line drastically. When you are young you only no what you are shown, and when I was young I was shown Sex and the City and that is what I grew up with. Because I started watching this show at a mere 12 years of age I was left with many false impressions of the world that I was just getting to understand. The content of this show was so farfetched and beyond my years however I enjoyed it because I knew it was the it show at the time. It showed episodes on sex, alcohol, love, and included profanity as well as nudity. A certain episode that stands out to me is one that still affects me to this day. It was a scene where a main character, Samantha, was featured nude in front of the mirror. She weighed a petite 105 pounds and was pulling skin off of her hips describing how fat she looks. That one scene, those thirty seconds, has left me with self-image issues that will never be forgotten. So many television shows have shown similar content, however, because this show was important to me it held a great power over me. To this day I am left with certain body issues, many of which are directly related to the show, and I truly think had I not grown up watching sex and the city, seeing scenes a little girl should not be seeing, I would have not been let with the troubles I face today.
