Satire has been used as a means to effectively convey an idea in a humorous way. Holberg uses satire in his novel, The Journey of Niels Klim to the World Underground , in order to ridicule sexism, government, religion, and most importantly, society. However, just by analyzing the text, we are only able to observe the skeletal features of his satire. Utilizing Bakhtin’s carnivalesque analysis on serio-comic, new light can be shed on the true meaning of Holberg’s satire. In The Journey of Niels Klim to the World Underground , Holberg uses reoccurring themes of creating opposite dominance in the subterranean world to create Menippean satire using a carnivalesque literary mode. First, I will use Bakhtin’s works to establish how the carnivalesque phenomenon was developed through medieval carnival. Some works to define carnival will be Mikhail Bakhtin: Creation of a Prosaics (page 92) and Rabelais and His World (page 7) .
