10-25-10 Sganarel’s Journey (167) The first philosopher meets seems to not care about Sganarel asking about lodging. The philosopher just yawned and ignored his questions. (169) The second philosopher is extremely emotional and cries whenever Sganarel talks about his misfortune. (169) The third philosopher laughs at everything Sganarel says, where Sganarel becomes very irritated. Sganarel is amazed at how crazy the philosophers are, and doesn’t know if this is a dream or not. He criticizes the “city of wisdom”. Already, the philosophers are negatively described. They do not seem “philosophical” as many would think, nor do they actually seem “intelligent” as described later in the story. (170) Sganarel meets a fourth philosopher, who at first seems helpful. He can only see objects that are far away, and explains that the “strong sight” helps him see right “inside a thing and seizes on its essence, which is hidden from other people.” At the end, they start fighting, and the philosopher beats up Sganarel, leaving him on the
