Psychology Notes: *Focus on the brain January 21, 2010 >What is psychology? < Psychology: The science of behavior and mental processes Behavior : overt action and reaction (objectively observable) Mental Processes : ‘private psychological activities’ like thoughts, emotions, ideas, reasoning processes (harder to observe and measure) o Example : smile= a behavior; happy= an emotion Smile is only a behavior because you do not always have to be happy while smiling; however, happy is an emotion and can be a mental processes. What do Psychologists Do? -About 40% or 1/3 of all psychologists work in clinical - About 1/3 psychologists are teaching or working in academics -1/3 work in management or administration - Rule of Thirds! ^ -Industrial organizational psychologists- they get paid and it is how to effectively manage people in organizations: Business Psychology: on a social level how to make a business work Clinicians: psychiatrists and (clinical) psychologists Psychiatrists: M.D, had residency in psychiatry and are licensed to prescribe drugs
