Introduction A. The bible presents a lurid assortment of plagues, described as acts of retribution by a vengeful God. B. Epidemics such as the influenza outbreak killed 21 million people in a matter of months which happened suddenly and easily. C. Over time as technology grew, people began to have control over the scourges of the past viruses. D. Vaccines and other medicines have reduced illnesses from the past dramatically nearly putting them to a stop. E. Those optimistic years in the second half of our century now seem to have been an era of inflated expectations. II. Thought of Victory. A. 1967, William H. Stewart announced that victory over infectious diseases was imminent-a victory that would close the book on modern plagues. B. Not only have deadly and previously unimagined new illnesses such as AIDS and Legionnaires’ disease emerged in recent years, but historical diseases that just a few decades ago seemed to have returned. C. Diseases such as tuberculosis, an ancient lung disease that haunted 19 th century Europe, has mutated into strains that defy the standard medicines; as a
