Chapter 1: The Challenge of Health Care and Disability Be able to define Health Care System. o Sum of all programs and institutions that promote the work of diagnosis and treatment in a given society What 5 chronic diseases account for more than two-thirds of all deaths in the US? o Heart disease, cancers, stroke, COPD, diabetes Be familiar with the basic statistics about the burden of chronic disease. o 44% of the US population lives with a chronic health condition that affects daily functioning o 18 million Americans have diabetes, 5 million aren’t aware they have it – often secondary complications are listed as reason for death but diabetes is underlying condition What are the risk factors for chronic disease? o Tobacco use o Failure to engage in sufficient physical activity o Failure to adhere to healthful dietary practices What evidence do we have supporting the idea that unhealthy behaviors are adopted early? o 15% of 6-19 year olds are overweight o 10% of 2-5 year olds are overweight o Percent of overweight children and adolescents tripled from 5% in 1980 to 15% in 1999-2000 Be familiar with the basic statistics about adult health behaviors, smoking, and health insurance. o 75% don’t eat recommended daily quantities of fruits and vegetables (why? Expensive, inaccessible, time) o 62% don’t engage in vigorous leisure-time physical activity for 10 minutes of more per week o 35% overweight / 26% obese o 45 million in US smoke tobacco products o 3,900 young people initiate smoking each day o Inverse relationship exists: people with less education are more likely to use tobacco products o (In 2006) Nearly 44 million people in the US didn’t have health insurance o People without health insurance – decreased use of: Cancer prevention services Cardiovascular risk reduction services Diabetic management What services do people without insurance show a decreased use of? o Cancer prevention services, cardiovascular risk reduction, diabetic management What are the three reasons why health care may not be affordable, even for those who are employed? o High deductibles, gaps in coverage, claims denials Explain why there is an increase of chronic disease in developing countries. o Infectious diseases have historically been the major public health concern o Number of people dying of chronic diseases is now twice as high as those dying of the combination of infectious diseases, maternal/perinatal conditions, and nutritional deficiencies Be able to explain the health-related impact of globalization.

o Dietary transition in low and middle income countries toward the consumption of foods high in fats, salts, and sugar o Demand side: rising incomes=ability to purchase processed foods and have reduced the time people have for food production and preparation o Supply side: greater percentage of the worldwide population is becoming reachable through marketing and promotional campaigns that encourage consumption of unhealthy foods; a lot of marketing targeted at children
