Karen Kolasinski #211 April 28 th , 2010 ISS 320 For my project I choose to do volunteer work with my fellow classmates, Joseph Buhlinger and Aaron DerMiner. We decided to volunteer with the GEAR UP/College Day (Gearing Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate programs) program with the National Homework League (NHL). Michigan State University works with this program to help high school students from the Lansing area. This program was created to help kids learn about college, and help them know to apply. It also allows them to visit Michigan State University to get a feel for what a college is like. This program is used to help convince students to do well in high school and to go to college. GEAR UP has a summer program for students around the Lansing area so that the students can stay at MSU for 5 days and get a feel for what it’s like to live on campus. First, the day before we had to go through a 2 hour training session, so that we knew how to act towards the students, and so we could help them out so that we were not completely

Unformatted text preview: clueless when we were with the high school students. We were with the students from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm. At the beginning of the day, we help the students that wanted to go to the summer camp register and fill out their applications correctly. Then we had a session where all the volunteers introduced themselves so they could hear about our majors and ask us questions about either our majors or just college in general. Then, by playing different games and using different learning tactics and strategies, we helped demonstrate that learning can be fun, and that there are many different ways to learn. We also got to take the students around part of campus and eat in the cafeteria, just to get a taste of what going to Michigan State is like. Some of the volunteers, including myself, took the students that wanted to see the spring football game there so that they could get a feel for what its like to go to a Big Ten school....
