Karen Kolasinski IAH 207 August 12 th , 2010 Paper #2 Is Anyone Really Who They Seem to be, or is everyone Just Trying to Pass as Someone Else? From a very young age, people love to play make believe games and everyone at some point has pretended to be someone they are not, even if it was just for a make believe game when they were five . It is always fun to pretend you were something you were not. It seems that people, no matter how old they are still like to pretend to be someone or something they really are not, but when you are older you are not always just pretending for your own enjoyment . Many people try to pass, which means to pretend to be something that you are not and have people believe that you really are what you are pretending to be . The only way people can truly pass is if the people they are trying to trick really believe that they are what they are trying to pass as . The person passing does not actually have to believe they are what they are not are actually become someone else; they only have to make people around them believe that they are what they are trying to be . In both “Pygmalion” and “Caucasia,” women, Eliza and Birdie, are trying to pass as something they are not; Eliza is doing this two have a better life, and Birdie tries to pass a couple different times for different reason, sometimes to fit in and other times to protect herself and hide who she really is; and they both are able to pass because passing is just tricking people into thinking you are something that you are not; and in most people need others help to teach them how to pass successfully .
