Study Questions for Plato’s Republic Book IV 1. How does Socrates determine what justice is in the city? (427e-435c) 4 cardinal virtues: Prudence (wisdom) - what ought to be done. Primarily in the ruling class. Fortitude (courage) - within the guardians Temperance (moderation) – is everywhere. They all agree who the ruler should be. Justice- is each class doing what they are suppose to and not meddling in the affairs of others. Aimed at yourself in the relation to others Ruler Guardians Producers There are four virtues within the city. Wisdom within the guardians, courage within the auxiliaries, moderations and justice are spread out over the whole city. Justice is the principle of specialization, the law that all do the job to which they are best suited. 2 . Explain the nature of justice and injustice (according to Socrates) in the polis . (433a-434d). Justice is what one’s own work. Injustice is trying to meddle in the craft of someone else. Money-making, auxiliary, and guardian classes must only do their own work. 3
