Michelle Walsh October 11, 2009 Theater 100 Play Performance Worksheet Name of play: West Side Story (musical) Playwright: Arthur Laurents Date of reading: November 8, 2009 (previously seen performed by my high school) Genre: Tragedy Plot: 1. The musical is set in New York in the mid-1950s, the musical explores the rivalry between two teenage street gangs of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The members of the Sharks are first-generation Americans from Puerto Rico taunted by the Jets, a white group who consider themselves the true Americans. Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. 2. Tony is the protagonist. 3. Falling in love with Maria is what causes the conflict. 4. Tony and Maria are in love but it is not allowed because the gangs which they are affiliated with are rivals. Neither of them can be true to their hearts and stay true to their friends. They must find a way to reconcile the two gangs or they will never be together.
