Unformatted text preview: Eduardo Ortez English 112 March 29, 2011 Poetry Essay Poetry Essay There are many factors that make a poetry piece superb. There is a vast variety of elements that can be present or sometimes even dominant within a poem. Poetic elements like imagery, sound, rhythm, poetic form, tone, word choice, and word order are all great contributions to a poem; however amongst all elements tone, imagery, and word choice are the most vital. The importance of tone is evident in many poems. “You were born to waste your life” is a good example of tone within the poem “In the Suburbs” (Meyer 651). Right after the first line of “In the suburbs” the reader is drawn into a dark and somewhat depressing tone. This tone amplifies the point, made by the author, that the suburb life is not the life one would want to pertain to. “The gathering itself is not what astounds her, but the casual accomplishment with which he has lied”, this line of the poem “Surprise” gives the reader a sense of disgust that a man...
