In class exercise on brainstorming and making a flow chart. Exercise is to flow chart the steps involved in receiving a shipment of materials, warehousing them, and perhaps later or perhaps immediately distributing them to the party who ordered them. Conceive of “receiving a shipment of materials” as receiving large shipments coming to a warehouse where many cartons of the same item are received, not a few boxes coming to a department with each box possibly having multiple types of items in them. There should be at least three decision points in the process. Brainstorm first to determine what the steps are, then flow chart. I expect the process to address at least these three issues in receiving materials and three in shipping. Note that I have done 80% of your brainstorming for you, so I expect high levels of performance on the remainder. 1. Receiving a. Is it the right stuff, what you ordered? b. Did you get the right amount? c. Is any of it damaged?

Shipping to the departments (shipping means more than saying you sent it to them. While simply dropping something off or simply getting it signed for is routinely done (FedEx, UPS) a process that works more effectively when the delivery is internal to the organization requires you to go through the same check in process when you deliver as when you receive. This prevents theft as the material goes from the warehouse to the receiving department) a. Is it an emergency order? b.
