Generic= Official (legal) name, listed in the United States Pharmacopeia Chemical= Complete Chemical description of the molecule Brand Name: Specific Drug or formulation trademarked by a manufacture; can be patented for 20 years Differentiate among the broad classes of drugs we discussed in class: e.g. hallucinogens, depressants, stimulants, etc. Stimulants: cocaine Aphetamine caffeine Hallucinogens: Mescaline LSD PCP Marijuana Depressants: Alcohol Barbiturates Other sedatives sleeping pills inhalants Opiods: Morphine Codeine Heroin Methadone Psyco-theraputics: Prozac Haldol Nicotine Understand the concepts of LD50, ED50 and the therapeutic index. Effective Dose- the dose of a drug tht produces an effect in some percentage of test subjects ED 50 refers to the effective dose for half the animal subjects in a drug est Lethal Dose, the dose of a drug that has a lethal effect in some percentage of test subjects LD 50 refers to the lethal dose for half the animal subjects in a drug test Therapeutic index- LD 50 /ED 50 Understand the concept of threshold. Threshold, the dose at which an effect is first observed Have a general understanding of a dose-response curve. Dose response relationship, correlation between the response and the quantity of drug administered, some response systems have higher thresholds than others, so dose response curves can be created for different drug effects. Some drugs have an all or none dose response relationship Differentiate among the different routes of administration of drugs in humans. Oral Ingestion
