Everyone needs water but some groups of people, like the Hawaiians, put greater importance of the availability of water. Western society and Hawaiians use water for similar purposes but the importance of water differs. The author says once water is gone the Hawaiians are gone too. I agree with this because Hawaiians are very connected to their islands and have a great respect for their lands. Water allows Hawaiians to grow food they need to survive and that their ancestors ate. It is wrong for Westerners to come into the Hawaiian lands and take over the land to be used for growing their mass produced crops or building. Also it was wrong of Westerners to use up water sources and redirect them to benefit their crop production. Taking majority of water and using or redirecting it causes plants and animals used to help the ecosystem to die off. People rely on streams to grow taro and fish. The fish provide nutrients for the plants and without nutrients the plants will die. When water is taken out of an ecosystem, the ecosystem is unbalanced and will be negatively affected. It is wrong for the US to overtake Hawaiian lands in general.
