Objectives : Basic Principles of Immunology Discuss host factors involved in nonspecific resistance to disease. Discuss the events involved in the body’s specific response to infection. Discuss the nature of the immune response and its importance in recovery from, or prevention of, disease. Discuss the principles of routine immunologic test reactions. Basic Principles of Microbiology Name the various structures of the bacterial cell and discuss their functions and roles in the pathogenesis of disease. Explain the effects of physical and chemical agents on microorganisms. Discuss the basic mechanisms of action of chemotherapeutic agents. Microbial Diseases and Epidemiology Relate the sequences in the body and the mechanisms involved during the inflammatory response. State the commonly found microbes in our environment and relate the role they play in disease. Demonstrate knowledge of common bacteria, parasites, fungi, and viruses that infect humans. 1

VII. Overview of Course This course is an introduction to the microorganisms that cause infectious diseases around the world. The nonspecific and specific host defense mechanisms are discussed. Methods for diagnosis including culturing and immunological procedures are covered. Other topics include disinfection, sterilization, standard precautions, antimicrobials, disease prevention and control. Laboratory related learning experiences, involving the testing of scientific principles related to lecture/discussion content, are integrated to support concepts introduced during lectures. VIII.
