Lecture notes 1/6/09 Human development- an interdisciplinary field of study devoted to understanding all changes that human beings experience throughout the life span Basic Issues Theory- orderly, integrated set of statements that describes, explains and predicts behavior saw a child push another child and wonder why they did that-theories try to explain why Continuous development- cumulitive process of adding on more of the same types of skills that were there to begin with slowly building- exponential Discontinuous development- different stages (can leave and enter a new one)- shaped like a histogram puberty, terrible twos Is the individual stable or open to change? Stable b/c genetics and experience OR change is possible if experience supports it universal stages: children everywhere follow the same sequence of development contexts: unique combinations of personal and environmental circumstances that can result in markedly different paths of development Nature: genetics determine who you are Nurture: environment determines who you are Lecture notes 1/8/09 - Psychoanalytic Theories- Discontinuous Frued- lived in victorian era (science began to take off) sex was something you didn't talk about- but was on peoples minds never worked with a child but only adults Psychosexual Stages Id- basic biological needs, appitites- need to be met immediately- Unconscious devil Ego- satisfy demands of the id with accord to reality- Conscious the id will say get some food, while the ego will make you get food without throwing a tantrum tries to balance the superego and id- referee Superego- age or 3 to 6- values of right and wrong jimmy cricket- your conscience- angel on your shoulder learned right and wrong Stages oral- birth-1year if their needs arent meet here than they will be stuck in this stage anal- 1-3 years potty training is major issue phallic- 3-6 fall with love with parent of opposite sex, later will fall in love with same sex parent because they want to become like them so they can have the love of mother- superego is formed latency- 6-11 sexual instincts die down and the superego continues to develop genital- adolescence puberty and rearing children PROBLEMS:

development was done by adolescence when you had problems when you were a kid they would be shoved back into the brain if a parent is missing there will be problems in development Erickson theory- Psychosocial theory different stages had different development basic trust vs mistrust- birth-1 year- ORAL gain a sense of trust and confidence autonomy vs shame and doubt- 1-3- ANAL give children choices initiative vs guilt- 3-6- PHALLIC figure out who they are industry vs inferiority- 6-11- LATENCY identity vs identity diffusion- adolescence- GENITAL intimacy vs isolation- young adulthood generativity vs stagnation- middle adulthood
