Christian Era- we are still in the Christian Era dark ages middle ages: medieval Renaissance Baroque Enlightenment Modern- 19 th century, 20 th century, 21 st century 4000 B.C 0 A.D 2010 Before Common Era Anno Domini- Year of our lord Common Era Bible is the most important document in this history 1453-1968 why 1453? Genzfleisch (Gutenberg) printed the bible that allowed him to print hundreds of bibles- lead to printing of other books ■ printing press was important because it allowed many books to be printed- literacy spread Fall of Byzantium ■ ceasareans headed to constanople ■ muslims policy was to convert or die- many headed west from the eastern orthodox religion had carts of books that they took with them that the western part had not seen- books about plato and greek literary figures ■ begins the renaissance Lecture 2 Roman Empire -325 A.D. Constantine was the emperor- spoke latin but wrote in greek to many christians- they were persecuted cause the roman empire wanted the christians gone by 325 there were so many christians that it became a problem- emporers mom became a christian Later Constantine declared that Christianity was the religion for the Roman empire ■ came to this decision due to lots of pressure from his mother ■ also came to decision while laying in a tent in battle and asked to see a sign and in return he would become a christian saw it the next morning- symbol called the Chiro is the first two letter of the name Christos in greek also saw the letters in hoc signo vinces- which meant that in this sign you will conquer- he won the battle ■ gets baptized right before he died Christian Era Rome fell in 476 A.D- end of Pax Romana ( for the roman peace) barbarians conquered roman empire Rome fell because they sought to give entertainment and had moral decay rather then focus on military and other important things The only leadership was the church- that then became the power of rome By 900 A.D all of Europe was Christian- everyone goes to mass every morning Dark Ages decline in literacy and decrease in books and educational opportunities Middle Ages- Medieval Renaissance- war of religions means re-birth in french ■ rebirth of the greek aesthetic or ideals human form greek architecture ■ 1482 Ficino= Neoplatonism- the new platoism comes about by the fall of Byzantium-increase in literacy...
