Akshay Patel 4/2/11 Period 1 Lab 3B: What is the Effect of Crossing Over in Meiosis Abstract: The objective of this lab is to find the crossover frequency and map distance in sordaria fimicola. From pervious knowledge, it can be inferred that if sordaria are going through meiosis, then the number of asci showing crossing over will be greater than the number of asci not showing crossing over. Slides of sordaria fimicola are shown which are going through meiosis where asci are shown. The number of asci is counted to see which go through crossing over and which are not to find the percent of crossovers and map distance. The results support the hypothesis and the accepted values of the percent crossover and map distance. In this lab, asci of a hybrid sordaria are observed and it showed that the crossover frequency was greater than 50% so there are more asci showing crossover than no crossover. Problem: What is the crossover frequency and map distance in sordaria fimicola? Introduction: Meiosis is a reduction division that produces genetically different daughter cells that have half the genetic information of the parent. Meiosis has two groups of divisions. In meiosis I, homologous chromosomes pair at the metaphase plate, and then the homologues migrate to opposite poles and in meiosis II, chromosomes spread across the metaphase plate and sister chromatids separate and migrate to opposite poles. In meiosis I, the chromosomes come together in a process called synapsis. During this process, crossing over occurs where the chromatids of homologous chromosomes exchange parts.
