Akshay Patel 10/30/09 English 4 Mr. Antao The Effects of Globalization American culture, such as wearing Nike’s and Levi jeans, listening to hip hop music is influencing many small towns around the world. In his essay “Global Realization,” Eric Schlosser tells how globalization is changing many places around the world. Towns with a lot of history such as Dachau and Plauen, which are in Germany, received much controversy for attempting to globalize. One of these towns as the site where roughly 30,000 people died and controversy set in when a McDonalds was built in Dachau for being just one-third of a mile from the entrance to the concentration camp. Around the same time a nightclub was built in Plauen. Both of these buildings are a product of globalization. Schlosser believes the citizens of this town are highly influenced by western culture. The effects of globalization are stereotypical because the people of the Plauen wear cowboy hats and bolo ties, which are not in American culture anymore while Dachau residents ordered their food at McDonalds and listened to 70s disco music, but beneficial to the town with many job and financial opportunities, also allowing the people of both towns an escape from the reality of being an ossified European.
