H20 + Lugol Solution Bag 15 % Glucose/ 1% Starch Initial Contents NEGATIVE POSITIVE ORANGE/BROWN ORANGE/BROWN POSITIVE POSITIVE CLEAR DARK BLUE/BLACK Initial Presence of Glucose Solution Color Initial Final Final Depesh Patel Lab #2 : The Effects of the Concentration of Solutes and Selectively Permeable Membranes on the Movement of Molecules Abstract The unique diffusion properties of water molecules, along with many other molecules, are what enable life and the world to exist today. In this lab, these highly vital characteristics of nature will be experimented. The objectives are simple; to understand and spot diffusion of molecules, to understand osmosis, to understand the concepts and workings of a selectively permeable membrane, and to discover and observe elodea cell reactions as it is placed under different environments. In part one of this lab, diffusion is tested as a bag containing glucose and starch is placed inside a beaker containing water and Lugol solution. If the color of the beaker is altered, than glucose (initially found only in the bag) must have penetrated the bag, reacting with water and the Lugol Solution. In part two, osmosis is investigated as a dialysis tubing containing the assigned solution (.8 M of sucrose) is immersed into a cup filled with distilled water. If the concentration of sucrose outside the tubing is inferior to the cup, than osmosis will undergo and water molecules will increase the mass of the tubing. In part three, potato chunks are used to portray water potential. The changes in mass are charted and the percent change in mass is also recorded. If the water potential inside the potato cell is higher than the environment it was immersed in, than the flow of water (through osmosis) will be directed outside the potato chunks, resulting in a lesser mass than the initial mass. In part four of this lab, an elodea leaf was tested, graphed and observed under environments with different solute concentrations. Diagrams were taken as it was in a normal environment, 15% NaCl environment, and a fresh water environment respectively. If the leaf cell contains a superior concentration of water molecules than its system, than it should undergo plasmolysis as water is diffused out of the cell into the hypertonic solution. The hypothesis were supported in each part as the glucose molecules penetrated the bag, the dialysis tubing from part two increased it’s mass, the water flow was directed outside of the potato as the results depict the final mass lower than the initial and the elodea cells certainly loss water inside the cell, undergoing plasmolysis.
