Akshay Patel AP Summer Essay 4 The election of 1800 led to the adoption of the 12 th amendment, transformed the way elections would be ran, and changed the way the government was to be ruled. The election was a true test of the constitution and the establishment of government. The 12 th amendment had electors casting distinct votes for President and Vice President. The United States became more democratic as a result of the election of 1800. The election of 1800 brought a two party voting system to the United States. The election exposed a major flaw in the constitution regarding the election of the Vice President. Before the 12 th amendment was passed, whoever received the most electoral votes was president and whoever received the next highest amount of votes was the vice president. In 1796, the president and vice president were from different parties. This made it difficult when it came to governing the country. In the election of 1800, the two candidates with the highest number of votes were Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. The election was a tie. The election then went to the House of Representatives were
