Roy Lan #6 KTH 1/12/09 Chapter 18 Section 2 1. Identify a. Radical Republicans- These people were led by Thaddeus Stevens and Charles Sumner. They wanted change, and fast. They wanted to break the power of the wealthy landowners of the south and also they wanted the Freedmen to have the right to vote. b. Thaddeus Stevens- He was one of the leaders of the Radical Republicans. He was from Pennsylvania. c. Charles Sumner- He was a man from Massachusetts that helped lead the Radical Republicans. d. Fourteenth Amendment- This law was passed in defense of the Civil Rights Act and it stated that all people born in America are citizens which legally gave the African Americans the right to fair trial and so on and so forth. This amendment didn’t apply to most Native Americans however. e. Radical Reconstruction- This period of time started in 1867 when a Republican was voted into office. Among the things the new office accomplished in this period of time were the reconstruction of the South and its governments. f.
