Roy Lan #7 KTH 3/7/11 Interest Group Essay- HIAA- (Changed to AHIP) The “Health Insurance Association of America,” (HIAA) and the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP) merged in the year 2003, to form what is now known as America’s Health Insurance Plans, or, “AHIP.” AHIP is known to be one of the most influential political interest groups in politics today, with over 1,300 member companies whom cover nearly 200 million Americans to date. AHIP’s mission is to help provide for the most effective healthcare possible within our nation as well as increase research opportunities. With this said, the best way to examine how AHIP affects the government and its policy decisions, one must first analyze its two most vital resources: money, and the media; and after examining the resources, one must then go on to observe the branch of government that AHIP seeks to influence, Congress. The first resource, and arguably the most important, that AHIP has at its disposal is money. They use the money contributed to their foundation in order to influence different levels of Government, from local and state, to the federal levels. To influence these different levels in government, AHIP hires lobbyists to get their message heard and to better inform Representatives and Senators in Congress. From the years 2005-2009,
