Social Work Notes Chapter 3 Cognitive Development -Piaget Theory -organizing new information -integrate new information into existing knowledge -adapt thinking to new information and ideas -schemas -modified in two ways -accommodation -something new learned -assimilation -learn something more of already know. -application -learned skills that are put into practice -identify clients current schemas that inhibit reaching goals -assist clients in modifying schemas through education, skills, etc. -Development -sensory motor (birth-2) -motor reflexes, learning to generalize -learning through senses -preoperational (2-6/7) -language is important -self interested (Everything is about them) -only see world for their perspective -concrete operations (6/7-11/12) -able to understand another point of view -concrete problems (black/white, good/bad, yes/no) -formal operations (11/12-adulthood) -ability to think logically and abstractly Psychosexual Development Theory -Sigmund Freud -personality development -id, ego, superego - human drives, wants and wanting it now, values and morals -development stages -oral (birth to 18months) -biting, eating, everything in mouth (exploration) -everything is about being fed -fixation -smoking, overeating, -anal (12-18months to 3 years) -poop -fixation/elimination -controlling -no control (abuse)
