News Journalism Can [news] Media Regain the Public Trust? Schudson says “YES” The media is not perfect- it often constrains “the range of expression” However, many of the things media critics hate about the press are things that make the press useful 1. Focusing on events allows journalists to escape the normal opinions and routines. 2. Focusing on conflict allows journalists to embarrass the powerful. 3. Being skeptical about politicians might make the public cynical, but it prevents the press from being manipulated. 4. It’s good for the press to operate as outsiders to the political process- in fact, they may need to become more “outside.” Hockenberry says “NO!” the media cannot regain our trust The news media tends to promote certain narratives, rejecting any story that disagrees. They do this, in part, to maintain the largest possible audience size. More importantly, news organizations want to please their audiences, not challenge them.
