Theater Notes The Renaissance Leaving the Middle Ages o Renaissance means “rebirth” o 3 significant events that helped usher in this new period of learning  and growth The Printing Press (c. 1450) The Protestant Reformation (1517) The Rise of the Middle Class o A return to the writings of the Greeks and Romans. A new interest  in philosophy, science, math, and the arts. o Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Shakespeare, Moliere Renaissance Theatre o Three basic types: Popular theatre: comedies and dramas for the masses Humanist theatre: plays popular with the aristocrats and  scholars; followed classic (Greek and Roman) ideals. Liturgical theatre: carried over from the Medieval period,  outlawed in many places, but alive in Spain. o The Renaissance in Italy The Renaissance first began in Italy in the fourteenth century Commedia dell’Arte Italian Perspective Scenery
