LECTURE #6: Manage Heat Illness Heat Index Heat Stress Index o Ambient air temp o Humidity o Solar radiant temp Wet bulb index Sling psychomotor/weather station Every high school must purchase and use Monitor every 30 mins and restrict as needed Stats o Since 1994 24 heat stroke related deaths in football 19 high school 3 college 2 pro Heat Acclimation o Definition- the bodies physiological response to tolerate hotter environments o Benefit- to reduce the amount of heat related injuries, and to increase tolerance of exercise in heat. Athletes may also perceive an improvement Physiological Response o Requires up to 14 days o Early stage (1-5 days) – involve improved control of CV function o Mid stage (5-8 days) – control body temp decreases o Late state (9-14 days) – conservation of sodium chloride (NaCl) occurs. Acclimatization to heat is maximal How to Acclimate o Progressively increase duration and/or intensity each day o Add just leg padding and helmets
